Does the EURO have a future?

on Dec 15

The Euro will turn 10 in just a couple of weeks and its future is all but certain. While the world is closely watching every move of the EUs finance ministers we thought it would be interesting so see what EUs citizens have think about their own currency. The EURO is not some strange investment banking product but something that is tied closely to the lives of everybody.

Flight of the Euro

Flight of the Euro

Lets start of by looking at how people perceive their governments performance in handling the crisis. We asked: “The government handles the euro crisis… well or poorly”

Government Handling of Euro Crisis

Government Handling of Euro Crisis

The chart above represents 500 people in Europe and not really surprisingly most people think their governments could do better.
But politicians always could do better, so we tried to asses how concerned people are and asked: “Do you feel affected by the EURO crisis?” turns out less then 50% of the respondents felt affected.

Now that we know that people are not really happy with their governments performance we put them in the driver seat and asked several questions on things that should or should not be done.

  • Should the EU get rid of the EURO?” The results here were quite surprising.
    • European Countries in the Eurozone: 46% (yes) vs. 54% (no) /
    • European Countries outside Eurozone: 56% (yes) vs. 44% (no) (pie chart)
  • Should we pay for other EU members debt? Bailing out other failing nation is probably the number one reason why people disapprove of the common currency.
    • 64% say we should not pay! only 25% say yes.
  • What should the nations do about the crisis. Cut spending or further increase their debt.
Do you feel effected by the EURO crisis?

Do you feel effected by the EURO crisis?

Blue = borrow more (31%), red = do nothing (34%), orange = stop spending (35%)
It’s an interesting trend to see troubled countries like Greece, Italy and Spain favor a “borrow more” approach.
Lastly we wanted to know if people think the fate of the European Union as a whole is tied to the fate of the EURO. We asked: “Does the EU have a future without the EURO?” – The opinions seem split on this one but a small majority thinks that if the EURO goes down so will the EU.
Will the Euro fail within 1 year?

Will the Euro fail within 1 year?

So does the EURO have a future?
It seems in the peoples minds it still does – there is still a majority of the people who support the EURO and who believe their nations would be off worse If they would leave the Eurozone. Just to make sure that our conclusions are correct we asked one final question: “Will the EURO fail within the next year” 66% say it will not.

Update (from Julian Kenny)
London remained divided on David Cameron’s veto in the EU vote last week (w/c December 5). An Evening Standard Poll suggested that 76% of readers felt that it would not damage the city.  Our sentiment obtained from all over the UK saw 36% of the participants felt that his move was
Foolish. The remaining voters we split; 32% felt Admiration for his stand and the remaining 32% being Unsure about the decision.
